Walking outside this morning, it was hard to ignore the smell of spring. It's still a little ways out yet, but it's coming fast. We've had some really nice warm weather lately and even though the ice fishing is still good, we're all getting ready for the next season. Spring Steelhead will start on the local tributaries in a few weeks and everything is shaping up for good fishing right off the bat. The fall counts from the Brule are in and the results are very positive. Over 5,000 Steelhead came into the river, with the peak of the run at the end of September. This is going to make for excellent fishing this spring for those holdover fish. Rivermouth fishing is another great option as the spring continues and gives both fly anglers and spin fisherman a chance to catch a great mix of fish. As of today, there's open water off a few of the rivermouths north of Washburn.
